Study on genotypic variation of antioxidant activity
and flavonoid content in sweet potato storage roots
Abstract: Sweet potato has much physiological functionality, which contains rich of nutrition. It has antioxidant activity that can eliminate active oxygen. Extraction and mensuration of total antioxidant and flavonoid were studied in the paper, and genotypic variation was analyzed, which helped people to understand the degree of antioxidant, to reasonably use food nutrition and to develop research on the functional foods to prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases. It also provides the basis for flavonoids exploiture and the high oxidation resistance and high-flavonoid resource selection, and promote the development and use of agricultural and sideline products. The result showed that sweetpotato had high ability to scavenge DPPH radical. Among 21 genotypes , the scavenging rate on DPPH radicals ranged from 51.4%-97.3%, about 17genotypes exceed 89%. The flavonoid content of sweetpotato has been measured by using Rutin as standard sample. As a result, there was variation in genotypic and location in the flavonoid contents, the Zi 883, Xu 55-2, Jinshan 1222 showed to be the choiceness genotypes, for they have high stabilization to location and high flavonoid content. During the experiment NRIS analysis had been used. The result also showed that the flavonoid content had significantly correlated to antioxidant ability.
