Abstract: At present the environmental pollution has become an important issue which hinders the sustainable development of the printing industry. Especially typical ink volatile gases VOC and their influence on people has attracted more and more attention .Though ink is the most important and common substance in the printing process, its volatile gas components and effects on people has not been systematically summarized and concluded. Currently in our country the studies primarily intended to research on the surface residue VOC of printing products, while essays on the effects of VOC on human health were comparatively deficient. This article aims to systematically obtain the current researches on typical ink volatile components and make analysis and conclusion about them. At first through analysising ink's composition and structure, it’s concluded that VOC come mainly from the ink binders. Then common gas detection technologies and methods were introduced (like solid phase micro-extraction and gas chromatography), which were used to detect ink organic volatile gas components. After that some major components of volatile gases and their hazards was described, which focuses on international studies on toluene’s effects on people (including Genetics, Color vision and Neurobehavioral performance). Finally, based on the current situation of controlling toxic volatile compounds ,some corresponding measures were recommended and extensive use of green ink was promoted.
