Abstract: Moment in Peking, written by Mr. Lin Yutang in English, was published in 1940, became one of the bestsellers in the United States. This novel shows us a general view of Chinese society from Boxer Rebellion in 1910 to the beginning of the Sino-Japanese War. In the novel, the author vividly portrays a lot of representative characters of Chinese public and many modern revolutionaries, especially the protagonist Yao Mulan, who bears good qualities of an ideal Chinese woman. Therefore, the aim of my degree thesis is to analyze Yao Mulan’ s deep-seated character as well as the causes from various perspectives, so as to help the readers to have a more profound and comprehensive understanding of Yao Mulan.
