ABSTRACT
With the help of previous research, this paper points out that the stage directions, like the dialogue, should be seen as an important object for drama stylisticians. It then takes pragmatics as a perspective on the study of stage directions. The major pragmatic theories employed are speech act theory, the expanded model of speech act theory and the cooperative principle. The author of this paper believes Ibsen’s A Doll’s House is a representative of conflicts of drama, and is suitable for analysis. Taking the exposition, climax and resolution as samples, this paper endeavors to draw implied meanings in stage directions, by which, we try to see whether the stage directions have anything to do with conflicts between Nora and Helmer in A Doll’s House. The sample analysis suggests that stage directions play an essential role in revealing conflicts of drama, and it is one indispensable element in drama texts.
